Transfer case shifter hard to engage

I just bought a 2001 a few days ago that was not running due to a battery. I have out it in my garage cause I just gutted it to do a major cleaning of all the parts, and remove the carpet, and I want to put a thin coat of duplicolor roll in Berliner before I reinstall my new carpet kit,,, anyway I went to take my console out and re only way I could remove the front half if the console was to pull the transfer case lever back,,, it was pretty hard to pull back almost like it was sticky or frozen up. I got it pulled back to take the console off BUT SHOULD IT BE that HARD To pull back?? If not wht can I do to ease it up? I know the guy I bought it from let the thing air the last 6-8 months without being drove! Thanks..

Did you test the 4wd prior to purchasing the vehicle? If the tcase functions properly then I would suspect that the linkage is damaged or is binding due to a body lift.

no i bought it off my wifes boss he is the original owner never been lifted or offroad, used as a commuter... I could not start the jeep to check everything ou, i can pull the handle back just seems really hard to do so, i dint know if there is something i could lube up, i thought maybe it was just that way from not being used... There is no body lift or anything on it..
