Exclamation Transfer or Axle Problem

Recently put a 4" spring lift on my 06 TJ. Did the transfer drop and all that. Now, for some reason when driving it, it almost seems like it slip outta gear for a split second. Not enough to notice in the RPM's, you can just feel alittle slug. Other times, it seems like it pops in and out of 4H. I've adjusted the transfer linkage and that's fine. Pulling into a parking spot the other day, drive pavement, 2H, turned hard left and it was almost like the rear left locked up cause it torqued to the front right then made a LOUD POP and settled back down. Not sure if it's a transfer or differential issue. Any help is appreciated as this thing is pissing me off now. When I jack the rear up and spin the tires, seems like theres a lot of play but not in the u-joints.

Are you sure your in 2WD? Because it sounds like your half in and half out of 4WD. If you were turning left and the vehicle all of the sudden pulled to the right or tried to straighten out wouldn't it be like the right tire locked up. Sounds like what happens when driving in 4H on dry pavement.

+ 1 what the coyote said,you have to be careful when you adjust the transfer case linkage,I did mine after a BL,and had to go in there again for the same problems.Mine was half in 4wh,and would pop out with a bang when accelerating.

Thanks Guys for your quick replies. I've double and triple checked the linkage. Even have left it loose on the set bolt and made sure it was all the way forward and drove it disconected. Linkage that is so there's no way it could be half in or out. So, I just went back out to the garage, jacked up the rear again, noticed I'm getting about 1/8" in and out movement on the drivers rear axle??? Haven't popped the pig cover yet in hopes someone might know what the f's goin on in there before doing so.

You can rotate a tire a little ways before it actually moves the driveshaft. I can go do it on any one of the vehicles outside. I would do this- find some good buddies like 3-4 and put the truck in neutral and the t-case in neutral push the truck and turn left or right with the truck moving at a speed like your going to park. See if it does it again if do then you know it is something in the axles.

Of course you can rotate it forward/reverse. I'm talking the axle if moving in and out about an 1/8". Took the tire off and the drum. I can literally pull the axle in and out. Passenger side is solid. Not the slightest movement at all.

Yes, I knew what you were talking about. That much end play is not a big deal. But it couldn't hurt to drop the cover and see what is up. I'm still leaning towards something being an issue with the t-case. It's hard to diagnose over the internet.

Right Right. Understand that completely. Well, guess it just got worse. Decided to start it while up in the air and see if the noise reappears. Unfortunately it did. Now, I can do almost a complete turn with the left axle before it catches anything. It almost feels like it's skipping over gears while you do it too.

Thanks for the replies guys. Funny how one always tries to take the easiest way out in shit and do the least work, well, it doesn't pay. Pisses me off too cause I had this rear-end rebuilt in April and only have 1,600 miles on it. Only reason I didn't do it myself is cause it happened the night before I had to drive to Washington state from Michigan for a funeral. Didn't want to have to deal with that after a couple days of driving. Of course if I had notice, I would've flown the whole family out but you can never tell when a parent is gonna pass. Anyways, not sure if you can see but the set screw for the diff pin loosend up and that's how all the gears got chewn up. Ring gear and pinion gear are fine. Now, one last question before I tear this apart, any suggestions on replacement parts??? Thanks again for all the input.

That in/out play of tha axle is normal when the slot (at the end of the axle shaft where the c-clip is attached) is worn out.
Perhaps the c-clip is damaged.
Take a look if the c-clip is ok. You don´t have t remove the cross shaft for that (like i the pic below).
The c-clip (red circle) sits there (blue circle).
In your axle you can see them there (green arrows).





But that can´t cause the problem you´re talking about.

either try to have the shop warantee the work or just weld the spiders for the time being. if you had gears changed and the same shop did the work on the front id pull the front cover and make sure all is well n there to.
