Transmission Assistance Needed

I was off roading last week and lost reverse in my 2003 Wrangler 2.4L automatic. I am now faced with a serious problem. Do I rebuild the trans, find one at a junkyard or junk the jeep? I am also wondering if a 6 cylinder trans will work on my four cylinder motor if I pull one from a junkyard. The trans guy wants 1600 dollars that I dont have to get it fixed. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Where do you live? I know a guy who will rebuild for $700. Just so you know, just because you lost reverse doesnt mean you have to get a new transmission it could be something else, as for what it might be I dont know.

I would say youre better off pulling one from a junkyard, but you always take risks with that as you wont know the condition of it.

I live in Chicago and how will I determine that there is another issue instead of rebuild? I talked to a trans guy today and he said that with all the miles it has on it (94,000) that it would be best to rebuild the whole thing because if you replace reverse everything else has to come out anyways and it is easier to replace everything at once. Also, reverse went out after some serious mudding / small pond driving. We checked the fluid and it barely read on the dipstick as well. Thank you for your help.

I was told by the place that rebuilt my trans that if reverse goes out they a pretty much done for. There was a trans on ebay for 600.00 that would fit 2003 to 2006.

Does it matter if the trans is out of a six cylinder? Are they the same? I have an automatic 2.4L

The 6cyl trans is a 32RH where as the 4cyl is a 30RH. I also believe that the 6cyl trans has a different input spline count than the 4cyl.

Wheny tear down an automatic everything comes out the front so by the time they get to reverse everything is out on the bench and why would you put something half worn back in.
