Transmission help

Original owner of a 2006 Rubicon Unlimited w/an automatic transmission. I have 48k miles on it and recently the engine light came on. Because of the light I cannot get the Wrangler to pass inspection. The code from the OBD is stating there is a problem with the Torque Converter. Went to 2 separate nearby dealers and they are both suggesting replacing the tranny for $4k, insane. The vehicle runs fine and the transmission shifts smoothly, no slipping or no measurable difference in performance. Had the transmission flushed and a fluids replaced but still getting error message on torque converter and can't get inspected in my state w/o a waiver (which I am working on). My question for everybody is 48k and transmission is failing, has anyone ever heard of this? The Rubi is basically a second vehicle for my myself and my wife and has always been babied and maintained to the letter of the manual. Any ideas on where to go with this? Obviously the vehicle is out of warranty, but does anyone have a contact at Chrysler who may want to know about this? Lastly any advice on this issue on what to do and where to go would be greatly appreciated. $4k is just not in the budget right now. By the way, I live in North Carolina.

I would take it to a small independent transmission shop. Independent, not one of the big mega-chain transmission shops like AAMCO. One more suggestion, find one that knows the 42RLE transmission you have and then ask if he is a member of the Better Business Bureau which is usually a sign that they try to be honest. Most ads indicate if they're a BBB member, call those who are and then find one that knows what the 42RLE Is.

When you have a choice, buy American.
