Transmission identification

I was wondering how I could figure out what transmission I have? I noticed my fluid is running low under the hood and I need to know what kind of fluid/transmission I have/need.

Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks
mike

The forum's crystal ball is down for repairs so you're gonna have to tell us if you have a manual or automatic transmission, what engine you have, and what model year TJ you have.

Ok, that helped. Your transmission is an Aisin AX-15 which requires a GL-3 or GL-4 75W-90 gear lube. The best recommendation for that I can offer is MT-90 from Redline which is a fully synthetic gear lube that meets all of the AX-15's specs and works very well in the AX-15 transmission.

Yes, your tranny is an AX-15 and it has a 23 spline output shaft, that is the transmission that the 4.0L engine uses through 1999.

What about a manual 2000 2.5l TJ? What type of tranny do I have?

Aisin AX-5 which was used on all the TJ's 2.5L engines until the 2.4L engine came out.

Yours is the NV3550, a completely different type of transmission used after 1999.

Pep Boys counter people won't know a 42RLE from a Boeing 757, all they need to know is what model year, engine type, and transmission... manual vs. automatic. If you give them a transmission model #, they'll give you a blank stare and ask for year, make, model, and transmission type... auto or manual... that is all you need to know for them to get parts for whatever.
