transmission or clutch

i'm new to the forum and i've been reading the forum posts. i have a 2000 4.0 that i bought about 3 months ago. it has recently developed a problem shifting into 2nd gear, especially after it sits for a night. if you down shift, or put too much pressure in 2nd it pops out as well. from reading the posts most people seem to think the synchros are going bad. i guess i have the nv 3550 transmission? also, i bought the jeep from a friend of the family, and she has told me that she never really serviced the clutch, so it has 167000 on the factory clutch. what do i do? new tranny? the clutch is def on its last legs, but replace with what transmission? what is compatible? is mine worth fixing?

Could have bad synchros in the transmission... The NV3550 is a fairly stout transmission, and would definitely be worth repairing if you aren't planning a motor swap any time soon.

You say that the transmission just started doing this, and is more likely to do it after sitting overnight... I didn't look to see where you live, but these transmissions are notorious for getting really "stiff" when they are cold. Does the problem go away completely once the transmission warms up a bit? You say that the transmission has 167,000 miles on it, do you know what the condition of the fluid inside is? (Did you change it when you bought it?) If not, I would start there, and see if that helps at all. If not, a reputable transmission shop should be able to help you diagnose your problem for sure. If you can't find a good recommendation from someone you know, take the Jeep in to a couple places before you decide what repairs to do.

Good luck!

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

it generally does get completely better after it warms up. i live in Ct but its not necessarily temperature sensitive. it was doing this over the summer when it was hot. i have had it for about 4 months now and i have not checked the fluid. what replacement fluid should i use? thanks for the advice.
