transmission rear output shaft

i am having some issues with this seal. i have replaced it 3 times and it still seams to leak. it only leaks when the jeep is in gear and driving. when i bought the jeep they did say that they replaced the transfter case from another jeep. it is possible the seal i am putting is not the right one for the transfer case input shaft?

Yes, some transmission/transfer case combinations will leak if the OE transmission output shaft seal is used. The biggest offender is if you have an earlier TJ with the 32RH automatic transmission and they installed a t-case that had previously been bolted to the 5-speed. That t-case's input shaft is not long enough to seal the output shaft in the 32RH transmission and ATF will leak big-time. If your TJ is a 2002 or older with the 32RH 3-speed automatic, I can tell you what you need to do.

Ok that is the 30RH and it probably has the same issue as the 32RH does when a 231 previously set up for the AX-15 is bolted to it.

What you probably need is an extended rear output shaft seal for your 30RH but I don't know if it uses the same seal as the 32RH does. Several sources of the extended 32RH output shaft seal include Teraflex, Summit Racing, and either Advance Adapters or JB Conversions... one of those last two also carries it but I forget which.

I would call them and see if they can tell you if the 32RH extended output shaft seal they sell is also usable on your 30RH.

If nothing else, you can replace your 231's input shaft to the longer version needed to properly seal inside the 30RH.

This assumes the problem is that they installed a 231 that had previously been bolted up to an AX-5 5-speed so its input shaft is not long enough to seal the 30RH's output shaft.

That is not the extended seal I was referring to which is needed to seal further towards the rear to compensate for the 231's shorter input shaft.

The extended output seal's front I am talking about is machined aluminum which is seated into the transmission's aluminum case opening around the transmission's output shaft. The rear edge of it has the rubber seal which is positioned 1-2" further out toward the rear in order to properly seal around the 231's likely too-short input shaft if it used to be bolted up to a manual transmission.

Again... you have a 30RH and I can only say your leak is very similar to the one that happens to the 32RH when a 231 that was set up for the 5-speed manual transmission is bolted on. So I can't say if your 30RH has the same issue but I'd bet it does... I just don't know for sure and if it takes the same extended seal the 32RH takes. Which is why I suggested you talk with one of the companies I listed for you... so you won't be guessing and taking the word of some Autozone saleskid or their website which only lists replacement parts, not parts to fix unique problems as you may have.

update to this issue.

friday removed the transfer case form the jeep and did a quick measurement and it look like the input shaft is to short that is not contacting the seal in the extension housing.

i have ordered the teraflex extended seal.
