Transmission service confusion... Advice needed.

I just purchased a 2001 TJ 4.0L I6 w/ 3 speed auto. It has 82k miles on it and I don't have any idea of a service history for the vehicle. I was wanting to go ahead a change the coolant, front and rear diff fluid, transfer case fluid, and service the transmission all as "preventative maintenance".

After calling around to various shops and speaking with different people, it seems like I get a different answer from everyone regarding the transmission service.

Some people say get if flushed (but the filter doesn't get changed), some people say drop the pan and change the filter (but all the fluid doesn't get changed) and some people say don't do anything if there is nothing wrong or you could blow your transmission!

I need to know what the best thing I can do for my tranny is.

First, make sure that any shop that does the work refills it ONLY with either ATF+3 or, better, ATF+4. Some shops will try to convince you they "convert" some other cheaper ATF they use for nearly all transmissions to ATF+4 with an additive but that's a bunch of BS.

Having installed that same transmission (a 32RH) to my previous TJ, I would drop the pan and replace the filter (easy) and have it flushed as well. Dropping the pan gets rid of about 4 quarts of the old ATF+3 and flushing it gets rid of the other 5 or so quarts of old ATF remaining in the torque converter and transmission cooler which is located in the radiator.

That replacing all of the ATF in a transmission that is shifting ok will cause problems is, to me, mostly an old wive's tale with little chance of it actually causing a problem.

When you have a choice, buy American.

if you want to change the filter go for it it cant hurt

i think the problem people have with autos in particular is they fill them backup to the line without starting them (so the converter is empty) and then the boxes change badly because a lack of fluid.

i have to admit that im bad for not changing fluid, if its clean and nice and red i leave it, only a slight brown tinge i tend to investigate or any slight smell of burning.

Something new has developed. I just had my front and rear differential fluids changed, and the tech told me the transmission pan was leaking. He suggested I carry it to a tranmission shop to let them swap the pan gasket/ change filter/ etc.

I have noticed when the jeep is in 3rd and going up a hill with light throttle the whole vehicle vibrates. Could the be a tranmission issue?
