transmission swap

Well I did it! took me 3 days by myself but I actually switched out my old tranny with another one. I used 4 jack stands to get the jeep off the ground and two floor jacks to help with keep the motor and tranny straight while I unhooked the trans and one motorcycle jack, which I could not have done without. the motorcycle jack really came in handy when removing the transfer case and the transmission. I have a 97 with an ax-5 and I put in a 94 with only 60k. couple of things to keep in mind when doing this, the slave is in a different position with the 94 and the bellhousing is shaped different and which really freaked me out was the sleeve on the 97 on the front shaft, I had to remove the front bearing retainer off of the 94 and put the 97 one on. I was afraid of removing that front bearing retainer, I didn't know what to expect but it fit perfectly on the 94, I used liquid gasket instead of ordering those flimsy paper gaskets and it works great! I couldn't believe the difference the old 97 trans which had 168k on it was soo sloppy compared the 94. I will never do that again though what a pain in the patooty! anyway a big thanks to this forum for all of the info I gather in prep. for doing the job.

congrats, good job.

too bad an ax 5 is almost guaranteed to fail . what fluid did you put in, thats the biggest factor. the regular ole gear oil they keep saying it uses eats the synchros.

only one 2.5, it wa also in the dakota. it was never in a neon. the newer 2.4 is the same as the minivan 2.4, and was built on the neon platform of the 2.0 from years ago. not sure if that is what they're referring to or not.

I put in Synthetic red line MT90, I had heard about that problem, I think it's with the GL8 that jeep had recommended. it's supposed to eat the brass in the synchros. If I had the time(and Money) I would have put in an AX-15 instead, but you know my old AX-5 lasted 168k not bad if you ask me.

99 did have two standard trannys. the 2.5 had the ax5 and the 4.0 had the ax15.

Yeah the 4.0 was what I was wondering. So with the 4.0 the ax15 was the only one offered in the 99?Never the less I am looking for the trans bracket that the mount bolts to.It also serves as an exhaust hanger.Does anyone have one they would sell????I can not find one at any parts house and of course we all know normal junk yards have no Wranglers.
