I have probably spent 30 hours researching/reviewing Stu's site (although those swaps did not involved (30RH) and was thinking this would go easier than it has (I know....) doing this for my daughter, she loves jeeps, I bought a 98 TJ 2.5 that needed engine work, and she struggled with the stick so I bought a 30RH to drop in. Thought it'd be easier than the 32RH Jerry did. I know there are a lot of very knowledgeable people who post on these forums, and figured I could eventually find a solution if I search long enough....
Got the transmission with transfer case attached. Also got the wire harnesses, and PCM, and torque converter. Bought it all for $350 from a guy on Craigslist. I figured out it came from a 2000 TJ (based on the PCM code and comparing the wire connectors to the Jeep manuals on morris 4x4).
I had it running well before the swap. Put nice tires (31's) and wheels. Etc. Was going to drive it and let her have my car.....I'd love to have a nice jeep......anyway.
Swapped transmissions, I thought it went smooth. Jerry did not get the harnesses in his swap, so he wired the 32RH by making a harness. I decided to use the harnesses. My only problem was having to do it myself without transmission jack - would love to be able to buy those "toys" someday.....I tried figuring out how to make the park lock cable work but figure out I need a new steering column, adjusted the shift cable, put some new sensors in CPS, TPS, camshaft position sensor.
Right now, it cranks well. Jerry has indicated you have to get a PCM from the year of the vehicle and not transmission. The PCM is from a 2000. Before I buy a PCM (about $150 bucks) I want to make sure it is the PCM. Fuel pump not starting up when I turn the key on, no spark to plugs. Checked relays, ASD, Fuel Pump, by replacing with horn relay. Tried spraying starter fluid, it would try to catch but never did. I did find a thread about checking those two relays, very detailed, that included me looking to see if either relay had any voltage from the PCM (small amount, like.025 volts) and neither relay had any volts from the PCM. That thread suggested the PCM was "asleep."
My gauges aren't working (except for oil pressure that moves a little). Unplugged the CPS and that did not effect the gauges. Plugged OBD11 in and it came back with error unable to connect message.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. If I need a PCM from a 98 AT TJ then I'll order it, I just don't want to spend the money unless I have too. At this point, I was going to order one but decided I would ask folks on this thread. Thank you in advance for any thoughts.
