Transmission woes

I have the nv3550 for a 2000 wrangler, that i should say is my daily driver. Not that everyone is from CT, but I need to find a replacement. The transmission has been grinding gears for a long time now, at least a year. I would just drive it until it breaks but my clutch is the factory original with about 185k on it and its clinging to life.

Also I'm on a pretty limited budget with student loans piling and work not what it should be. I was hoping to find a decent used one but that doesn't seem to be the way junk yards to things these days. It's either a rebuilt through the junk yards or an affiliate for like $1200 or a used one for close to that.... Thoughts anyone?

Are you sure it's the tranny itself and not something else (like clutch or tranny fluid)? My 2nd gear had a bad downshift grind and a good quality oil resolved it.

X2...If you know your clutch is ready to go, what makes you think the trans is the issue? Maybe your clutch is just not fully disengaging.

The clutch may not be disengaging, but it grinds in 2 3 4. Especially on a downshift. I can actually double clutch it and have it shift normal. It will actually come out of gear too.
I guess I figured that its been like this for so long that it must be an internal problem now, even if it wasn't originally.
