Trany poped out of gear

So I was out wheeling today and it was a very bumpy road and very steep down hill so I had it in second gear and was using it to slow me down. When I hot the gas I noticed it was in neutral this happened a few times to me I just put in a new clutch too. Plus when we got to the bottom of the hill we got out and it smelled like burnt clutch. Are you not suppose to slow down like that. New to wheeling

1998 tj 2.5 with Manuel trany 5 speed

Mine pops out of second from time to time, but usually only right after I shift in to it, like it doesn't lock in or something. Mine I'm fairly sure is caused by my body lift however. The shifter catches the console!

Do you have body lift installed?

Not really sure what would cause that. Only advice I have is that on mine at least you have to push in the clutch nearly all the way going in to second or it will grind and not stick in, on mine anyway! Maybe you have a similar problem.

Sounds like a bad gear synchronizer.

i also had this problem with my tj. To fix mine i had to remove my shifter boot and grind out a little chunk of the metal plate that u will see after u take the shifter boot off to make it fit into second all the way. The boot was just pinching against the center console and not allowing it to fully engage into second.
