tune-up gone wrong?

I posted a thread a week ago about waterproofing my distributor after a stall-out in the woods. I decided while I was buying a new distributor, I'd pick up new plugs and plug wires. I used dielectric grease around the distributor cap, and at the plug connections...the problem now is the jeep is running like total crap:
1.)The idle is inconsistent. When I start the motor its up about 2000 RPM's then come back down after a bit. After it settles it still wavers a bit.
2.)I'll be driving and the engine will just cut-out completely then fire back up... This problem seems to fade away after a while.

Anybody have any idea what happened? I thought I was going to be imporving my jeep, not sabotaging it.

I'm quite positive that there's no dielectric on the ends of any of the plugs. If there happened to be some on one of the tips, would cause all of them to fail?? I want to say the cap itself is the problem... or maybe the main wire that goes into the top of the cap?
