Turn signal melt

So, today after returning from dinner with my lady, I noticed a burning smell, at first I didn't think much (cool fallish night, neighbor could be having a bonfire) then I saw smoke coming from the steering column, after frantically pulling everything apart I discovered this:

It looks like the most outward pin on the bottom connector start to burn/melt.

The least awesome part of this is that the plastic receiver part of the conector is also toast, which i think means I'm going to have to do some soldering if i can't slide the new plastic over it.

So, a few questions, any ideas what would cause this? I was driving with my brights on when it started and they're now permanently on. Is there a fuse I can pull so that only my brights will disengage? And finally, is this a known issue or just an 11 year old jeep getting cranky?

For reference: 1998 Jeep Sport 4.0L 5 Speed, 31s 130k miles

Sounds like the wires in the column shorted out. I know if you install high wattage headlights with out relays you can cause the headlight switch to overheat and burn.

I have the Factory Service Manual if you want a copy. Just PM me.

My situation is similar although I thought what caused it was me holding down the left turn signal, because it would stay blinking. I was driving when smoke was pouring out from the column. I looked inside the turn signal and I there was an orange glow. (it was still smoking) so I grabbed a small extinguisher and sprayed it. I didnt think I had much choice. Now my headlights DO NOT work at all (parking and brake light work)
Would anyone know what my options are at this point? Why are my headlights out? I suppose this is my biggest concern. Should I replace the turn signal switch?

I did replace the stock headlights with a set of H4 lights. Are these lights considered high wattage headlights? I am not sure if this was the cause of the smok from the column or the H4 headlights I installed. ( but I had those lights in for quite some time if that were the case) I was thinking because I held the turn signal down.. Now I have no headlights
...NO WHAT? How do I get my headlights to work again?
Do you think just replacing the light switch will work? I mean it is new. The interior and parking lights work, just so you know
THANKS
