Turning off daytime running lights on canadian model

I have a 2001 wrangler that apparently was sold in canada originally (bought used in Seattle area in 2003).

I would like to disable the daytime running lights, I see some posts on that but am having trouble identifying the "box" on the firewall, if anyone has a picture it would be great.

Also, can you direct me to any articles, manuals or anything that would tell me what the differences between the american and canadian models were?

Thanks,

There is not much difference.
Day time running lights are manditory in Canada
The speedo will have the large numbers in Kilometers with MPH under them.
Your odometer should also be in kilometers and not miles. So if you jeep is showing 100000 on the odometer it is actually 62000 miles.
I will try and get some pics of ours for you.

You know, my speedo has the large numbers in MPH with KPH underneath, my odometer is in miles ***I THINK***, I'll have to verify that. I wonder if the dash has been changed?

I found this on another web site.

Jeep
Jeep TJ (2003). Many people disable DRLs (daytime running lights) by unplugging the module itself. This works but will usually disable some other aspect such as your high beam indicator. The Jeep TJ (mine is a 2003 Sahara) uses a motion sensor to send a signal to the DRL module to tell it the Jeep is moving and to activate the daytime running lights. To defeat this, you need to open the cable assembly leading into the DRL and find the wire which is coded WHITE/ORANGE and cut this wire so that the motion signal never reaches the DRL and the lights stay off until YOU want them by YOUR choice. There are no adverse effects whatever; everything else continues to work properly. I went a step further since I do want them on if I am on the highway for a long trip. I cut the wire and connected the two ends of this wire to a switch which is fixed under the hood. One position is DRL ON, the other is DRL OFF. I don't know what years or models this will work for but I suspect it would work for many situations.

Jeep TJ (1997+). (Possibly superceded by above.) Manufactured in Canada come equipped with dim DRL's. To disable them, you need to unplug the control module that operates them. Its located on the firewall under the hood, drivers side; Its about the size of a beeper (pager) Unplug it and make sure it dosen't dangle down onto the engine. The only side effect I have noticed is, the high beam indicator that tells you that your bright lights are on, doesn't work. But who really needs that anyway!!!!

Thanks for the pictures MoparNut, I appreciate you taking the time to do that. The Canadian dash looks different than mine, I assume mine is standard for US. I do have the DRL module in the same spot, thanks for confirming it for me, it is a little bigger than a "pager" as described in the text you found so I wanted to make sure I had the right component.

Another question: The odometer is digital, and I suppose there is an ECM setting for display in KM vs. miles, and I would think that would affect the speedometer too, so if someone were to swap it from Canadian to US dash they would only have to change the background for the dash and program the ECM? I have a sticker on my drivers door pillar that clearly states manufactured for sale in Canada, so the dash has been converted at some point and I'm just curious how one would do that, not that it matters I guess.

I would think changing the dash display would be easy. Bolt out and bolt on. I would think they would have to flash the ECM with the proper program. I was told ....so take this with a grain of salt..... that the ECM also stores the mileage so swapping out gauges cannot erase the true mileage on the vehicle. So to display correctly on your jeep I would think that the ECM would have to have been flashed to change it to Miles instead of Kilometers.

I am sure a much more knowledgable person or a true chrysler / jeep tech would be able to confirm or will chime in on the thread.
