Uh what did I break?

Working on fixing this ongoing squeal problem on my jeep, examining where the front shaft goes across to the wheels, but before the joint are. where it comes out of the case is a plastic ring. on one side It was tight against the case, on the side the sound appears to come from it was slid out. I though it could be loose and causing the noise, who knows?! ive been looking at everything I can. tapped it a few times to move it back in, and being cold out the plastic broke on the first tap. I just want to know what this piece is, and if its important. I imagine that it just keeps dirt and debris out of the case, so its important but not gona kill my jeep now. I was gona super glue and put it back on, but I am missing a smaller piece.

2000 sahara.

I would but its dark out, maybe tomorrow man. Im pretty sure its just to keep inside the case clean, its about 6 inches from the breaks and stuff. just a plastic ring that goes around the shaft and is raised. I took it for a drive and it felt fine so. Im gona try to get it back on so it keeps clean, ill get a pic tomorrow if I remember

The plastic piece is exactly what you described it being, it helps sling the mud, water, dirt etc away from the axle tube opening. you can either replace it or upgrade to a much better made aftermarket one.

Yup it just a "fake" seal... Its just there to prevent big rocks and keep most of the mud an water from entering the tube. There is another seal inside the tube where the carrier is also to prevent whats in the tube getting in tge center section.
