underhood "splatter" mark...

There's a discussion on another board, but I wanted to see if anyone here has an idea for this issue as it appears to be fairly common...
At least twice after a hard day of wheeling, I find a 6-8" diameter "splatter" mark on the underside of the hood. The mark is directly above the power steering pump. However, the fluid is never low at all, the pump is never wet, and there's nothing on the ground. The mark appears to happen during the day and is dried by the time I get home. On one occasion, the fluid showed up on the left fender. It looked a little like the orange antifreeze in color, but was thicker like brake or steering fluid. I couldn't tell anything definate from the smell.
I had a "mechanic" take a quick look and he said there were no leaks and that I "must've ran over something".
I DID see what looks like a check ball on the top side of the steering pump near the line. Is this a pressure release of some kind or just a casting cover?
Anyone have an answer?

Maybe it's coming out of the coolant overflow bottle as mine does. It splashes up inside the bottle enough that it comes out the overflow tube then gets all over the place. Several times I thought I had coolant leakage problems on the trail but that's all it was.

Gone wheeling Friday through Sunday.

When you have a choice, buy American.

It seems like anything that gets in the engine bay ie. MUD, water, anitfreeze always ends up on my hood as well with the splatter effect. I had a similar problem and found it to be a leak in the radiator getting blown up (possibly by the fan) onto the inside of the hood. Not sure if it is related to your problem jus a thought.

Jerry's right on this one. When you wheel at different angles and such and things slosh around it will seep out of the overflow bottle. Same thing happens to me. I gauge my wheelin day by it. Bigger the stain on the hood the better the fun I had.
