Arrow underhoodlight/soft top issue

I bought my first *new* car two weeks ago (new to me not being made in 1970 and less than 15 years old.) A 2004 Jeep Wrangler X 4.0l with 136k (is that really considered a lot? I think that's normal.) I have owned a Jeep before; a 1974 CJ5 with a 304. But this Wrangler is a wowzer to me (air conditioning and wiper delay! Omg!) And I am totally lost on how to turn on the underhood light. The manual doesn't say, just what replacement bulb it takes.

Another issue I'm having is, I took off the side windows of the soft top and while on the highway (doing 65-80mph) I heard something like paper tear. When I got home I looked under the top and there is a strap connected from the back of the top to wear near the door is and is bolted down. Well, thos straps on either side are torn and barely hanging on. I even tore it a bit just by touching it. Are those straps critical or no? Like.. the top won'tstart lifting?

The light works on a mecury switch. Just take out the bulb and take it to the store. They have them on the shelf. I don't remember the number. I just got a new one last week.

Yes you should replace those straps.

I am not familiar with the straps you are mentioning as my top does not seem to have those, or I am missing the description some what. My hood light does not and has not worked in years. I really don't see the need for it.

Do you have a factory top 530? The straps support the fabric, they run from the rear bow to the middle bow, and are the ones that always poke out when you fold down the top... They're about 2" wide and dark grey or black, woven something or other...

Yes! Those are it. Very wide and are bolted down. They tore near where they're bolted. if they rip completely, are they gonna mess up my top when I have my windows off? Like the top lifting?

To get the lens off, there is a little gap at the middle of the end (opposite the electrical connection end). Just pry there with a screwdriver.
I replaced the whole unit on mine, as the lens was burnt from the heat, have actually have saved the old unit, if there are any questions.
There is a little trick to removing the entire unit. It's hinged. Pry underneath from the driver's side to unclip it (separate the backing piece from the unit itself) and expose the bolt that holds the backing piece to the hood.

I do have the factory top. I was not sure what straps she was refering to but now I do.

I have to keep an eye on those straps when putting my soft top up. They can get tangled up and make it difficult to anchor the back flaps, without being untangled. Maybe someone had them tangled up and put too much strain on them, hence some original damage or they were working with the top when it was very cold (say 10 degree C or colder).
When all is in place, those straps are very tight on my Jeep and seem to give support to the top side area. I can't see that they serve any other purpose. Perhaps you can rivit some seat belt material in there to reinforced them - just brainstorming.

You can get a switch operated light from 4 Wheel Drive Hardware (Part #J0111A) for about $12. They have a more robust bulb than the stock ones and with the switch you won't need to worry about the mercury switch turning your light on at extreme angles

Stop buttering me up

It was a quick answer on the way out this morning. I have seen posts on replacing the strap. Nylon webbing is available online and I believe I have see that seat belt straps can be used.

My Jeep has been mine for two weeks and the straps are barely hanging in there so I think they previous owners did something or just the heat and all. A piece literally broke off in my hand. A chunk in fact!

You should be able to do it by hand, I'd think. You might need a leather sewing awl, but probably an upholstery needle, some dental floss and pliers will do it.

Thanks. I'm gonna hit up the junk yard for a seat belt this weekend and see how this works out.
