Upper Engine Knock. CONFUSED?!?

Ok so my last post I talked about how I had an annoying tick coming from the engine bay. Sea Foamed it because people told me this and that. They said it was a sticky lifter well...Sea foam didnt work and it eventually got louder. Decided to open up the valve cover and found this. The picture shows two spots where I believe the rocker arms are actually hitting the top of the valve cover! The knock I have is inconsistent and loudest when given some throttle. The sound increases as the rpms increase. Also I have been noticing a significant amount of oil coming out through my exhaust system. (spitting black crud out of the tailpipe and a lot of it.) I used about a quart and a half driving about an hour and a half at highway speeds. Has anyone seen this before and con diagnose my problem? Bad valves in the cylinder head? Bad springs? Also performed a compression test. All cylinders put out between 140 to 170 psi. Much help is needed fellow Jeepers!

ok..oil in exhaust
compression is good so that should rule out rings, valves and headgasket
it could very well be leaking oil past the valve guides, either because of wear or oil not draining back and building up in the valve cover

update on the engine noise. my worst fears have been confirmed. I was able to contact the previous owner of the jeep and found out that he had sunk the jeep in muddy water all the way up to the throttle body :0 the guy replaced the top end just to get it running again, and I unfortunately inherited his abused engine. 4 of the 6 piston deals are shot and that grimy sandy water got in between the piston and cylinder walls shredding a couple thousands of an inch of either the way and or pistons themselves do that noise is a piston slap. -_- I'm now having the engine rebuilt with a completely new bottom end and I'll try to salvage any parts I can from the top. Estimate 2000$ +. Fml.

Wouldn't it be cheaper just to drop in a running, low mileage 4.0L?

I played around with some options an honest to god I really don't want to mess around with junkyard engines granted they are a hell of a lot cheaper but I would prefer a fresh one. It comes with a 5 year warranty over bored pistons to 4.2l also the place is local so no shipping charges. And I've also looked at refurbished motors 1000 -1800$ also the cash for clunckers program was a death sentence to most 4.0s I was informed the government forced junkyards to cease up and low mileage engines so they couldn't be out back on the road. God damn our government.

What is the lowest price on a 4.0 you've seen?
