Question uuuugghhhh...now what???

So I go out to my Jeep to go grab lunch. I notice that there is about a 3" wide line of fluid that apparently ran down the parking space I am in (slanted spot) and came out behind my rear tire. I go up and look underneath the front of the rig and notice spots of fluid all over the front area. Sort of a rusty orange like color. I think of my coolant right away since it's orange and the fluid is all up in the front area. Open the hood and there is some even up on top of the radiator and the fan blades. Look around and don't see what it could be but it was a decent amount of fluid. Open my radiator cap and the fluid is still full in there. It's almost like something burst after I got to work early this morning, but I never heard anything. I decide not to even start the engine just to play it safe and have it towed. It was only sprayed around in droplets towards the front of the engine and most seems to have spilled out on the ground sort of underneath the belt area (1/2 - 1 gallons worth). I'm thinking water pump, but I had no warning signs that it might be going bad or anything. Any other thoughts on what it might be? Thanks, and it's an '04 with about 110k on the clock.

Would this have drained all the fluid from the radiator, as it was still at a full level when I looked inside?

My water pump did the same thing. Check all around it for any sign of leaks.

you are correct, sir. It's a crack in the top of the radiator.

At 110k if it's the first time for changing anything in your cooling system, best thing to do is spend a couple of extra bucks and replace the water pump and thermostat while you are at it. Do the work yourself and save a ton of money.

I wish I could do the work myself, but with traveling next week and working I can't squeeze it in. Pretty good deal though through my mechanic, they are replacing the radiator, new gasket for the thermostat housing, and a new thermostat all for a price of $611 OTD. I asked about just tossing in the water pump as well, but couldn't cut the extra cost for that right now. There goes my haircut I had planned for this afternoon...lol

What's this "paypal" stuff, I don't follow...bbbahahahaha

Yikes! For that price I hope he is using a Mopar radiator. I replaced my radiator, thermostat and total was $150 parts and my labor...that included coolant and a gasket. Took me a total of 3 hours. For an extra $50 I also replaced my water pump, so for $200 total and my labor I am set.

Granted, I used an aftermarket radiator, but that price seems steep to me.

Radiator, t-stat gasket, and t-stat for $600? Dude, too bad you don't have more time because this could easily be done for ~$200 by yourself, depending on which radiator you're going with. Where at in Colorado are you? Your money, but I'd help a fellow Jeeper save $400 bucks. I've changed thermostats and radiators a few times in my TJ...

You guys are right and I could have saved some serious money by doing it myself. I've seen just how simple this job is but I didn't have the time or work area to complete this job with traveling out of town next week for Thanksgiving. One of those times where I just had to get it done now.

JFjeld - I'm down in Colorado Springs and I do have a few other projects I'd like to do myself if you are willing to lend a hand down the road.

Sure, would be glad to help. I'm 30 mins north of Denver, but I get down to the Springs occasionally. Just ran Eagle Rock and Saran Wrap a few weeks ago.

And make sure to check out the CO-specific forum here on WranglerForum: Colorado Jeep Forum - Jeep Wrangler Forum. There are quite a few active folks from CS who post regularly there; I'm sure you'll get many more offers to help.

$600.00? Wow, that is too much just to change a radiator and a thermostat.
$150.00 at three hours max of labor. That job is no where near 8 hours labor.
My mechanic didn't charge me but $60 labor for my radiator. You are clearly getting ripped off on that job.

So it ended up being a little better than I thought. Once I got there he told me that he got the cost down to $558 OTD due to finding a better priced radiator. I know it would have been way better doing the work on my own, but it just wasn't an option at the time and the rig is my only vehicle.

Don't beat yourself up too much. DIY is much cheaper but there are times you have to farm it out. You had some valid reasons. What radiator did you get?

I'll have to ask him about that as I was up in arms yesterday and it didn't cross my mind at the time...lol

I previously went through two OEM-style radiators with the plastic tanks and crimped seams that ended up leaking. So I last went with an all-aluminum style with TIG-welded seams that I found on eBay. I believe it was from 'radiators4less'. Its been working great for the last 2 years, and I believe I paid less than $200.
