V-8 Engine Swap Question

I have got to have more power in my 98 Wrangler. This 4cyl. 2.5 isn't cutting it.The problem is, if I do a 4 to a 8 swap, I'm sure that I won't be able to pass my state inspection (MA). Then what? Is there any way around this? Has anyone had a problem passing emission testing after a swap? Please help. I feel like I have to put a V-8 in, or I must get rid of this way under power Jeep.

It would help if you tell us where you are and why you don't think it'll pass inspection. If your state just won't allow it thats one thing, but if it is just an emissions thing, then some proper planning should be able to get you thru it.

Another option that might be less troublesome would be to drop in a stroked 6. They can be made to build v-8 type power, but it looks like it came from the factory, or at least like it could have. That might be enough, depending on the laws in your state!

i live in ny and state laws say that you cannot swap in a motor that didnt come factory and the motor that is replaced must be the same year or newer. what this means is that i cant ever drop in anything other than a 4.0 or a stroked 4.0 that can pass the odb2 test. no v8 for me if i ever want to drive it on the street

I love how here in IL, cars with obd 1 system (95 or older) dont have to pass emissions.

If you do a V8 motor swap, it has to be EFI so you can change the flash card in your factory EFI. When you do this and go to DEQ, it will show up on there computer as a 4.0. You will need a 4.0 ECU. There is a guy in my area that dose 5.2 Magnums with aluminum heads that his really sweet, and it will pass inm. The link to his site is www.backwoodsoffroad.com
