Angry Water in Gas Tank?!?

OK - after we had a substantial rain I discovered that I left the gas cap at the gas station last time I filled up. The TJ hasn't been started since before the rain. Is it likely that I have water in the gas tank and, if so, what can I do about it? Any advice I can get will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for a great forum! - TJNUT

I've left mine off before and had mucho rain. I was convinced that rain had to have gotten in there. I put the cap back on and ran it. so far, so good. been a year.

can't say water didn't get in there, can't say that's what you should do, but if it did get in mine, it wasn't enough to do any damage or engine trouble.

If your paranoid about it, drain the gas. If not....

Couple of things. First, water will float, so if you have a good amount of gas, you'll be ok. There are things like HEET that will absorb some water, you can always toss a bottle of that in if you're concerned. Unless it's A LOT of water, you'll be ok.

If it were me, I'd drop a bottle of HEET in it now and fill up before it hits 1/4 tank. Maybe throw a bottle in every fill up for a few times.

The little metal sealy thingy inside the filler neck should have protected it pretty well..

Thanks all for your replies and tips. I think I'll go the heet route. It has a little over half a tank and I can always hope that the little spring loaded metal filler cap did its job.

Even with the metal "no-siphon" disc, the water would have to go somewhere I'd think.
