Unlike an automatic transmission that is VERY fussy about the type of ATF it gets, the 231 t-case is not fussy at all. I would just get a good quality ATF+3 or ATF+4 like from Valvoline, Mobil, Havoline, etc. and call it a day. No need to use an ultra-premium ATF in the t-case though a synthetic like ATF+4 is a good choice since it doesn't get changed all that often.

Thanks. Valvoline is my oil of choice. I might try that. I may put royal purple in my trans since it had to be rebuilt already and also thinking about a trans cooler. I can tell when I'm working the old automatic on the trail it gets super hot and sometimes I can smell it.

Tranny coolers are good, you don't want your tranny ATF to get much hotter than about 240f or so. And at hotter temps like that, you really should be running a fully synthetic ATF+4 in them. I added a tranny cooler and installed Valvoline ATF+4 (a full synthetic) into my 32RH tranny I installed last year, it seems to be a good combination... especially when towing my little pop-up trailer up the mountains in warm weather.
