What function do control arms perform?

Obviously, a n00b question, but what role do they play in the suspension of my TJ? I know there are "upper" and "lower" control arms, as well.

What's the difference between the two? Upper and lower what?

Please be patient with me. I'm learning one part at a time, lol.

And one more question, why should I replace them with a suspension upgrade?

Thank you guys and gals and keep up the good work!

Control arms mount the axles to the frame. Stock, there are four contol arms to each axle: two passenger side (upper and lower) and two driver side (upper and lower). the control arms pivot at both mounting ends (axle and frame) and allow the axle to move up and down and at the same time prevent forward and backward movement. They are also known as trailing arms. Lateral movement is restricted by the track bar (aka panhard bar). Since we have coil spring suspension, the coils in conjunction with the control arms perform the same function as leaf springs do by themselves.

Since control arms are a fixed length, when you lift a Jeep, the axles will move toward the center. Replacement control arms will move them outwards plus correct the tilt (pinion angle) that the axle would have developed on stock control arms.
