Question What happened

Howdy! My 05 rubicon started leaking oil from the front crank and rear main seals last week. The vehicle only has 36,000 miles and has been serviced meticulously. So what gives that both seals go bad at the same time?

IMO since it only has 36K miles on it---- the seals dried out from sitting....but I could be all wrong...have heard of it before though, have the diffs been serviced?

Yes all fluids were changed at 27,000 i.e. transmission differentials and transfer case. Oil changed every 4 months or 2500 miles Valvoline 10w-30 Fram filter

Glad everything is getting taken care off...I would still suspect dried out seals from not being driven though.....

Thanks, Thats a possibility. What seems strange is that could the seals dry out even though the miles are low I drive about 50 miles once a week 1 trip. That's why I'm confused.

The differentials have nothing to do with the crank or main seals...

That is true however sometimes they do have seals in them...and if the seals have dried out in the motor from lack of use I wondered if any other seals might be bad...and first thing that came to mind was the diffs...guess I should have mentioned head gaskets etc as well.

I am just thinking about how sometimes Jeeps with real low mileage may have issues from sitting so much...and was wondering if the diffs had been serviced/ so that maybe those were okay.

JP2611 is correct in that when I had the diff serviced @27,000 the right seal in the front axel was leaking. Well, I have the Jeep at a local mechanic to replace the seals. It's got to get done to keep the vehicle dependable. When I had the dealership look at it I thought thew were taking advantage of a woman.

I bought a 2005 in Nov 2010 and it started leaking within 90 days. It had 37,500 miles on it when I bought it. The RMS had to be replaced and the front transmission seal also had to be replaced. Welcome to my world!
