What in the world is going on with my turn signals?

Sorry if this gets lengthy, but I'll try to explain the chain of events as best as I can.

I recently did the tube fenders on my Jeep. I am using a little 2 wire LED for the turn signals like countless others have. I tested out the lights without permanently installing them and they worked, apart from the rapid flashing that was expected to happen. According to the seller of the LEDs, this would be fixed by replacing the stock flasher unit with one of these: LED Flasher Unit 5 Pin TJ LJ 2001 2006 | eBay

So I ordered the flasher. Here is were my stupidity starts to shine. Due to me needing to paint the fenders and not wanting to mess with the turn signals before doing so, I ran without front turn signals for a week or so. It was fine until one day I noticed my signals didn't work at all. When I hit the stalk, nothing happens on the dash or the lights. The only thing that gets any kind of action is when I turn the headlights on, the right turn signal indicator comes on steadily on the the dash, but the light doesn't actually come on the outside. Things get even weirder. I can get the light to turn off on the dash by hitting the stalk up (which would normally activate the right turn signal).

I looked around for a cause, and realize that in my rush to get the Jeep back on the road, I left the left turn signal wires bare. At some point, they must have touched, and messed something up, right? Because I just replaced the flasher unit and it didn't fix the problem.

Please halp!

Also, I just replaced the turn signal fuse behind the glove box and it did nothing.

Is there a missing electrical ground connection caused by having painted the fenders?

Not to my knowledge. I don't remember any type of ground on the fenders.

Are the only type of fuse/flasher/relay for the turn signals the one fuse behind the glove box and the flasher behind the steering wheel? Could this be an issue with the turn signal stick itself?

Are these to replace the turn signals that were in the flares or the front ones in the fenders? And what did you do about the side marker, and/or parking lights?

Yes these are for the lights in the fenders. The side lights in the flares are still there, just hanging loosely.

Did you just wire the leds to the turn signal and ground wires? Try pulling the bulbs out of the side marker lights and see if that makes a difference.

Yes. I'll give it a go, but I doubt it will make a difference. For a while I was running without front turn signals, just the sides and the back. Now nothing will work.

Next time you're in Indy or I'm in Kansas I'm buying you a beer. What in the world is that fuse for?

But as with many things in life, you have to take the good with the bad. Any idea why my left turn signal is on even though the stick is in the neutral position?

I noticed the left side marker bulb seems to be out. Could this cause the right turn signal to stay on?

So the fuse was blown?

An now the left signal blinks... Plus the right light stays on?

Unless you have wires crossed somewhere the left being out shouldn't effect the right

Recheck all the bulbs too, maybe replace them. Turn signal lights on the dash of my YJ will glow, and go off when pushing the stalk like your symptom when I get a blown bulb. It's possible you blew a couple bulbs.
The different side issue could just be coincidence. You may have one blown on each side.
