What is this?

Used 1998 Jeep Wrangler Lancaster PA | Used Jeep Dealer, Used Cars -1J4FY19S1WP784096

Hi, I have been looking at this jeep and it looks pretty nice, but what is the thing on the back of the rear seat?
This is the only one I have seen like this. Also, if you notice anything about it i should know, please tell me!

That's a security compartment addon so you can store junk behind the rear seat. Typically that area is exposed when the top of off. It'll only keep honest people honest.

Has the hinged top, which is folded up.

You lock your tailgate and you have a secure place to put your valuables. I have one and love it, but it takes up a lot of usable space. It is not exposed when the top is off, it seals against the tailgate.

Mine came with the security compartment optioned from the factory. I use it and to be honest I'm glad I have it but its not a bomb shelter. Really locks and doors are just deterrents anyhow. I like to think my tools won't fly through the back of my head in an accident, so I use it to stow them.

I'd say that rig is about 2k overpriced. You need to do a thorough job inspecting the undercarriage for rust. Thorough means crawl under the rig with a hammer and screwdriver and check every inch of frame for rust. You also need to look under the carpet and check where the body mounts bolt to the frame. Also look on the underside of the front fenders to see if rust repairs are evident.

The actual condition of the vehicle cannot be determined by anyone over the internetz. As for pricing, that is widely varied depending on condition and location. Here in Portland Oregon a Wrangler of that year with those miles, a hardtop, full doors, and in decent shape with no mechanical issues beyond "normal" for it's age and mileage will easily be $8-10.5k. The real value is whatever the market will bear, or more exactly what the vehicle is worth to YOU. I paid just south of $8k for a '99 with 149,000 miles, 4.0, AT, Full doors, soft top, and some 31" duratracs. This is after looking at nearly 20 wranglers on the market at the time. The only compromise I made that I wasn't crazy about was it not having a hard top. It was in good enough shape that I didn't want to pass on it though so I got it anyhow.

I've given the advice to those who haven't had much experience with going over vehicles and what to look for: IF you decide that it's the "one", take it to a REPUTABLE shop and have them do an inspection that includes a compression/leakdown test, full suspension/brake/drivetrain inspection, and look for previous accident evidence. Usually this will run anywhere from $75 to $150 depending on the shop and how intensely they go over it. Again, this is money you will not get back either way so I'd make sure it's a serious contender first, and definitely take it to a REPUTABLE shop.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know, I bought that jeep today!
I was able to get the price down a little, but it does need a little work. The front tires rub the lower control arms, the transmission leaks a little, the valve cover gasket leaks, and it needs Freon. I am super exited though!

I'd like to lift it about 2" as well, what would be a good way to do it? I don't want to spend too much, and ill be daily driving with occasional wheeling with my friend.

bump, I cant decide between

1) 2" teraflex spacers with better shocks (ome?) would I need bump stops?
2) Rough country 2.5" lift
3) 2" BDS lift

Im getting either 33's or more likely 32's

2) Junk
3) Not bad

Personally, If I were you I'd start out with a 1" body lift and maybe a 1" motor mount lift that you can use for the next upgrade. My budget boost lasted all of 9 months before I hated it and got springs. You can get spacers on eBay for dirt cheap though.
