What is this part?

I pulled my right rear rubber wheel well cover out so I could access the bolts to get the fender flare off. I was suprised to find pieces back there that are now completely exposed with the cover out. I assumed it looked just like the other side and I could run it without the cover so I wouldn't have just one wheel well cover on the entire Jeep. My only guess would be that it's the fuel pump. Any guesses?

It is your evap canister, it's on the later model TJs. I dont have one, now do I know it's actual purpose but it is part of your exhaust system.

That is the evaporative canister which is part of the smog system. Its main job is to trap gasoline vapors.

Ahh ok. Thanks for the replies! Has anyone ever had a piece of metal made to cover it up so that the rubber cover doesn't have to go back in?
