What kind of lift + tires for trail riding ?

I am not that big into mudding nor rock crawling, but I do enjoy to just drive around the boonies and explore. I do not think I need a major lift or big tires to do exceptionally well in the trails. What kind of lift and tires do ya'll recommend ? I was thinking maybe a 2 inch and 31's ? Also, I would like a smooth riding lift. Should I build my own kit or just buy it complete ? Thanks

I used to have a 2" spacer lift with 32's and liked it a lot. You can go with OME they are very known about their 2" lifts and have a nice ride. Mine was Skyjacker with hydro shocks and again worked great. It depends how much you want to spend. If you stay on that height you won't need any mods. Also, what axles do you have? Are you thinking AT or MT tires?

i have a 2" bb from rocky road outfitters, skyjacker shocks, and 31" tires. it worked well for me when i would off road with it. the tj is my dd and since i got the cj i have retired her from off roading. the 2" is enough lift to comfortably ride the trails and ride down the road.

I am thinking MTtires. As far as axles go, I plan on keeping the stock one that came with my 97 TJ sport, which are ? lol. Do you guys recommend also buying a steering damper ?

I totally agree with you. You do NOT need big tires. 31's are fine for forest roads, nasty bad roads and almost every trail.

If you get to the point where you want to run the tank traps or the "waterfalls," well, then there's lots more you can do at that point. And by then, you'll have a better idea of what you want.

MT Tires are good. The axles on your 97 TJ are fine, and up to the job.

I would also think about adding lockers and rock sliders before I added really big tires.

Will I need to do any further modifications with a 3'' lift ? I would like the ability to flex and have enough room for those 31' or 32' to move. Thanks

Most 3" lifts do not start the "death-spiral" of complications (drive shaft angles, brake line changes, death wobble issues, blah blah).

You could do a 2" budget boost (hockey pucks above the springs, basically) and see if that's enough room. That's easiest and by far the cheapest. Add a one-two inch body lift maybe later.

BUT, if I'm reading between the lines correctly, you're already jonesing for a BIG jeep. You could also just bite the bullet, put in a quality lift and axle upgrades, and just run those 38's. If you're gonna do it eventually anyway....

When you say "most" lifts, which ones are you refering to ? I would rather do a simple lift and not have to deal with other supporting modifications. I have been thinking of doing a 2''-3'' lift then possibly a 1'' body lift for even more clearance. Thanks for all the help Geoff !

some do 2" BB with a 1"BL i'm leaning on doing the BL next summer to go along with my set up.

I say "most lifts" because I'm certain there are 3" lifts out there that require you to redo pitman arms, lower the transfer case, redo driveshafts and brakelines, and quite possibly make a mess of the steering geometry.

But a 2" budget boost won't do that. Neither would a 1" body lift. It's why it's such a popular combination -- 3" of lift gets nice big tires with minimal complications and the least amount of money. It's a moderate approach that works for most people.

More complicated lifts do have advantages - more flex being the biggest one.
