What the hell did I just do???? :(

Required info: 04 Sahara 5sp with stock D30/D44 (assuming rear is TrackLock'd and front is open) and stock tcase.

So I'm summoned to help my buddy who high-centered his 2wd chevy 2500 on a ridge in a pasture. Hooked up the strap to front tow hooks, put in 4L and tried to pull him out in reverse. He was good and stuck so the Jeep was sliding to the left as my tires were slowly spinning then...POP-POP-POP-POP-POP. Oh S***! I mean it was loud. And the jeep was jumping a little with the pops. I stopped, checked everything, ran through the gears and shifted the tcase - everything seemed okay. The 1st thing I thought of was an autolocker popping but mine aren't locked? I hoped maybe things were just in a bind and no big deal. Tried it again...POP-POP-POP-POP-POP again. It would only start to do it when I would finally let the clutch all the way out and things were really torquing. So I turned the rig around and pulled him out from rear tow hook but the front end was still popping like crazy when I'd let the clutch all the way out. End result, the front end now pops (or clanks) loudly when turning and the steering control is significantly reduced - it's relatively okay going straight ahead but tough to keep in the lane on slight curves in road. Steering is just flat out crazy on a normal turn at low speeds or from stop. The power steering is still there but seems like I have to turn the wheel 2x more to get the result. Also there is a muffled clicking you can hear with the windows down.

When the whole thing happened my buddy described it perfectly. Sounded and felt like when pulling something big with a heavy chain and it starts to slip and the links start to rapidly slide against the tow hook.

A few observations...
drag link can be moved by hand when wheels are straight - the movement is at the 3 joints (don't even know if that's okay)
I can't see anything that looks "wrong" or busted.
The sound was definitely coming from the front end and seems like the left.

^ x2 - since you were doing it in reverse you were putting more stress on the D30. Check the u-joints at the knuckles and take off the diff cover and inspect the innards.

you described exactly how it sounded when I blew a rear in a camaro doing a burnout in reverse. Id yank the differential covers off and see whats going on.. especially the front.

Well, that's kind of what I feared.

But how would any of that affect the steering? Because the only symptoms I have are now with the steering.

Front hooks for pulling me out. Rear hooks for pulling you out. never pull hard in reverse.
Ok, Duely noted. I would have pulled the same way.

Well if there was enough damage to the diff, the axles might have shifted or bent.

just do a visual look at the ujoints then crack open your diff and check the gears should take about an hour

Even though the Rear Gear ratio is lower than 1st gear and makes more logical sense, its never a good idea to pull in reverse, lots of added stress on the front drive components and steering.

The same is said for a Diesel truck that I have, I can pull a house in drive, but in reverse w/ out reinforced tie rods, the front end may collaps and tow in if done incorrectly.

Verdict is in. Mangled spider gears. Dug about 12 teeth out of bottom of diff. Almost knocked a hole in diff cover. The R&P gears still look great though. My buddy has it at his shop now replacing the spider gears. He said everything else looks fine. I was really, really, really wanting to regear and add lockers while I was at it but just can't spend the $ right now. But man did I have to fight back the urge. The wifey would murder me when the cc stmt showed up.

Guess I won't be pulling in reverse any more...
I just wanted to keep is really slow and low by using R to keep things under control and causing any probs. Boy, what a freakin moron move that was

Yup - thankfully it wasn't serious.... but know you know! If your gonna be pulling your buddies out from the front, you need a winch!

Yep, lesson learned. And the buddies may just see me show up and hand them a shovel next time instead.

Damn, that is some serious carnage.

Hope you are back on the road soon Nick.

At least you have a friend who can help you out with fixing it.

Go ahead and get the gears and locker, she will not know.

I am looking at 8.8 swaps.

Yeah, I'm really lucky to have a buddy that works at a Jeep dealership. He's the lead Master Tech there and can pull a few strings. Got it covered under warranty

I better not. I'm still in the dog house for the lift, wheels, tires, kc lights, and new tranny, over the last few months. I'm going to wait and just buy my new gears and then lockers over several months and maybe she won't notice it.
