What's the Trick?

What's the trick to getting that stupid plastic locking ring on top of the gas tank to lock into place all of the way around the treads? I cannot get this thing on there without it popping off and it's driving me nuts I've already accidentally put a hole through my creeper

It would be wise to go and spend the $20 or so dollars on a Pump Ring Wrench... yes they make them.

But also, use a little lithium grease to help it slide on easier. Just go slow and use some huge locking pliers.
