What's this about a heater core?

Ok. Here's the deal. Today I had a deal fall through on a hardtop, bummed about it, but got to thinking.

My soft top is pretty amazing, and I really don't need a hardtop, or have to find a place to put it in the summer. However, the reason I've been scouting them, is because my heat doesn't seem to be hot like it is in other trucks or cars. I mean, it's warm, but almost lukewarm.

I've been reading up about having to flush what I've seen referenced as the "heater core." Something about hooking a hose up yada yada yada, flushing.

I've noticed that I haven't been the only one who's had this problem on the forum, so I'm wondering, is there a write-up somewhere so I can do this at home? It doesn't seem something I would need to pay a shop to do for $300, right?

Any clues and fill in's would be GREATLY appreciated. I'll await, shivering.

open your hood, look at the firewall on the passenger side.
there are two small hoses going into the firewall. unplug them, then stick up a garden hose and open the tap.
switch between the two openings to loosen the gunk inside.
