Where is this leak coming from? Pic's

I took my jeep off road on this very hard dirt road. I emediatly heard a clicking/ clanging noise coming from the front end. I poked my head out and it sounded like it was coming from the front drivers side, when i applied my brakes it went away. As soon as i let off the brakes it came back, i drove riding the brakes slightly and no noise. When i got home i went under to investigate, I found nothing loose. Not even a heat shield, everything was tight. I did find this leak on the BOTTOM of my manifold? Everything else is dry as a bone. The leak is forming at the lowest part of the manefold, so im assuming it's coming from above. The only thing i see is the back of the valve cover may be leaking. There's alot of grime sticking there. Also if you look-the first bolt that holds the manifold is wet, the others are dry. I also took a pic of the back of the block, thats a little wet also, which indicates the back of the valve cover is leaking. Could this leak on the manifold come from that? It looks so fresh. Any help would be appreciated. I also took pic's from the top-it's all dry except for one fuel injector.

hm that is an odd one. I would clean it off, and see how long it takes to come back

most likely valve cover, the like to leak from the back and drip all the way down. even from the top pics i see some grime around it anywayk, might as well change it and clean off the excess oil.

Yeah i was thinking it might be that, but was not sure. That was the only part of the jeep that was/is not clean when i bought it. I new i had to do it, just wanted to wait. I NEVER had any luck dealing with valve cover gaskets, ALWAYS leaked on me. I tighten them to much.

mine leaks in the back too.
i'm only loosing about 1/4 of a quart every 3-4 months.
by the time i need to add any, it's due for an oil change anyways.
it needs to be fixed, but i'm not that concerned with it right now, it's not hurting anything. i just put a drip pan underneath so it doesn't get all over my garage floor.
i too haven't had much luck with those gaskets in the past.
yep, no torque wrench either. lol.

Yeah i went out and bought a drip pan from wal-mart also. I origianly thought it was the rear main seal leaking, but now after a closer look i believe its just the valve cover. What could the clunking noise be?

So you put a wrench on everything? To me it sounds like a caliper is coming loose. The threads aren't the strongest in the world on the knuckle and have been known to promote bolts just falling out.

I'll recheck them today, But i did put new rotors on when i first bought the jeep. About two months ago. Two weeks ago i had the wheel off, i thought i was hearing a squilling sound when the brakes were applied. The pads were fine everything was good. I then checked the rear drums. Boy that was a bitch. The drum did not want to come off. It finally did and everything was dry and fine thier too.

i am looking at a jeep and the guy said the only problem is the valve cover leaks a lil bit. how hard is it to fix that and is it a big problem? is it something i would be able to do on my own? thanks matthew

I changed mine to put on a banks header,it took about 3 hrs their very easy to work on only one bolt it a little tough to get to but not really.It was gonna cost over 300$ at a shop,which pretty much payed for a sweet header.Im an ok mechanic id rather build some think and then pay someone else for veh. repair but not this.

Yeah the valve cover gasket is not hard at all.Just keep track of the bolt locations because some are bolts and some are studs that hold wire looms and hose retainers.Also as stated you need to make sure to torque the bolts to spec and not over tighten them.You can do it in an hour and that is taking your time.I changed one on a 2001 a couple weeks ago in about 30 minutes and I didn't get in any hurry at that.

take a picture of the bolts so you can make sure they all go back in the same place.
