Why is my TJ squeeling like a pig??? (No it's not because of the banjo music)

OK the last couple mornings here in East Tn have been rather cold for us (around 25 Degrees). When I start up the jeep it has a wierd squeeling noise that randomly gets louder and quieter. It sounds like it is right behind the radio in the motor compartment. As it gets up to temp it gradually goes away and when it's all the way up to temp is gone and dosen't return untill another really cold start. Is this the belt (I think so) and what is causing it? How can I make it stop??

pop the hood and then start it and go take a listen. You should be able to pin point it then. If its the belt, inspect the pulleys and the belt itself for wear. Replace anything that might need to be.

That's odd that the intake could cause that noise, but it does kinda make sense because the sound never really changes with the motor. It seems to be all on it's own so air flow is possiable. I wonder I could mod the intake tube so the cold thin air wouldn't make all that racket when it flows thru.

mine's not the belt. Its more of a whining sound than a squealing sound. It's pretty annoying!!

First place I would look is the belt. Then the power steering pump. It's a long shot but I've had similar trouble in other vehicles. Power steering pump would squeal until it got hot.

Sorry to revive this post, but... I still cant find this noise and yesterday I had a random thought to shift into 4wd and the noise went away. Shift back into 2wd and it returned, back to 4wd and it stopped. I had said that it stops when the jeep gets up to temp but I think that was wrong, it seems to stop about 10 minutes into the drive. Any new ideas????? The jeep is still under warranty but if I could fix this I would like to. I think i'm gonna make a video for Youtube for you to watch to get a better idea of what i'm saying.

No go on the video today, I guess it's not cold enough to make the noise come out.

I'd go to the dealer and let them bang their heads against the wall.

I think maybe it is a heat shield or something like that. Is there anything like that around the transfercase or around the crossmember?
