Wierd idle after dead battery

Left the lights on yesterday. Used my wife Escape to jump my Jeep.

Currently it starts without a problem but when I come to a stop I get a very low idle. The 'check gauges' light also came on a couple times.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

Thanks
Dave

Can you get the alternator tested at a shop? I think places like pep boys does that for free. The battery may have died because the alternator wasn't keeping it charged... and now its acting up cause its still not charging. Thats my unprofessional guess

You are going to need to jump on it pretty hard for a bit to get it to re-learn itself. If you can flog it in 2nd gear around 4k rpms for about 10 minutes and then let it idle with all of the interior functions running. AC, Radio, Head Lights, etc...... After about 20 minutes of that process it will be back to normal.

The battery isn't charged up enough or it's dead. The engine will BARELY run if the battery is near dead. It won't run long at all if it's dead, even after jumpstarting it.

The TJ's alternator (as do most others too) REQUIRES sufficient voltage out of the battery for it to work, otherwise it either can't put enough out to charge the battery, or it won't put anything out at all. Remove or disconnect the battery from a running TJ and the engine will die. Unlike the days when our vehicles used generators instead of alternators which would run fine without the battery.

Wow. I guess everybody has a different way. If it came in our shop with those symptoms, heres what I would do myself.
1. I generally charge the battery to a full charge.
2. Leave the battery unhooked while chargeing, "or" for about 5 minutes afterwards.
3. Start the vehicle without touching the gas, and let it idle for about 2 minutes.
4. Then show it WOT, or wide open throttle on a test drive once or twice.
This starts you over from scratch with full operating voltage, and a computor ready for relearn procedure. Also shows minimum voltage at idle, and max voltage at WOT from the throttle position sensor. Just so you know, TPS operates on a 5 volt reference from the PCM. Just my 2 cents, welcome to try the other ways too, they may work as well.

1.Minimum voltage from the TPS in idle position."Should be below 1/2 volt"
2.Max voltage from the TPS in WOT postion." Between 4 and 5 volts."
3.Emissions count from O2 sensor," Varies with, air intake, coolant temp, and map sensor."

W4, we tried that with my battery last weekend when I killed it with the headlights setting up camp. Had to run the piss out of it at about 4k down the dirt road about 3 miles before it would even idle on it's own at all. After that we let it sit there and idle with a full load of A/C, Radio, Lights etc.....then it's been fine for the last week. Fires right up everytime.
