Will Removing Front Driveshaft Leak Fluid?

I've got angry sparrows in my front driveshaft and want to remove it to diagnose/fix. However, I'm in college and am limited on time. If I remove the front driveshaft, can I still drive the Jeep around while I work on the driveshaft? Also, is there any way to determine which u joint or if the centering ball needs replaced, so I can possibly avoid changing everything?

Yes you can remove it and drive around. I did last week till my parts came in.

As far as the picking and choosing goes, why would you not replace them all while you have it out? I just replaced it all the other day. Not too bad just timing consuming. Check out stu-off-road for awesome step by step guides.

Front Drive Shaft Overhaul - 1
huh, its really that easy to take out the driveshaft and put in joints. Repair shops used to always send us their axles into us at carquest for the machine shop to do them.

Thanks guys! Gonna remove it over the weekend and inspect the parts. I also need new lower control arms so I'm a bit tight on money at the moment.

Yes, that actually is a good piece of information to keep handy! If you remove (maybe not on purpose) the output (?) shaft it will though right? I seem to remember reading about someone who had their entire front driveshaft pull out and they ended up cutting a water bottle in half, taping it over the transfer case hole and drove home in 2WD...

Both YJ and TJ fine without front but on YJ leaks if remove rear as it is what TC output seals against

On TJ can remove rear without leak

The redesign on output seal was 94ish so not sure on 95 YJ but all other YJ a no go without rear driveshaft as it leaks

But if did SYE then YJ no longer leaks without rear shaft
