Windshield probs

Yesterday as I was driving into town, I passed a gravel train. Luckily for me a small rock fell off the truck and smacked me right in the windshield.

A buddy told me to find one of those roadside windshield crack tents where they bill your insurance company, and offer them cash without giving them my any of my info. Any other suggestions. Naturally that crack really bothers me.

Would not know what a "roadside windshield crack tents" is.

First, contact you insurance company to find out id glass breakage is covered. Not all states and insurance companies cover it. Then you can go to any reptuibule glass company and that will bill you insurance company just the same.

Every once and a while they'll be some guys in the parking lot of Meijer or Wal-Mart, with a big banner that reads: "FREE WINSHIELD REPAIR" Its no cost out of pocket, they just bill your insurance company.

Is it cracked or star chipped. Glass repair shops can only fix chips and stars not cracks.

They will all bill your insurance if you are covered. Go some place with a warranty that you can go back to.

I'd be wary of a in a parking lot place. Who you gonna call if something goes wrong?

Call your insurance company. I have St. Farm, $500 deduct on both collision and comprehensive coverage. Had my windshield replaced no charge.

Insurance companies often look at it as a no brainer, money wise.

If you are distracted by the crack and wreck how much is it going to cost them?
Lot cheaper to play preventative then go for the big payout.

Something else, if your Jeep has airbags. The windshield is part of the SRS system.
A weak windshield can change how the bags deploy. And if someone gets injured because of it, just wait to hear from their attorney.

?????????? The air bags are controlled by an inertia sensor mounted to the tub. How does the windshield have anything to do with it?

The windshield controls the shape of the airbag on the passenger side, and becomes a back to support it. If you think about it the air bag wouldn't do a lot of good stopping you if it was just hanging out in mid air. You hit the bag, the bag is stopped/held/supported by the windshield and the dash.

Easy enough, take a pillow and hold it by the top. Slam your head into it. Head goes right on by. Now put that pillow up against a wall. Repeat test. Bet your head doesn't go past the pillow.

A damaged piece of glass or even a faulty install will change how an airbag works.

Whoops forgot the attorney part Neil. I've been in the business of auto repair for nearly 40 years, granted I don't know everything, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn last night, but I have had more then my share of dealing with insurance companies and #$)*%*)% attorneys. I tell you what, let em find out you were "negligent" in having the windshield replaced, and because of it their client was injured when the air bag didn't deploy properly. You, and if you are lucky your insurance company are not going to be happy campers.
