Wiper driverside isnt working

Wiper on driver side quit working . After taking it apart found on the end of the rod is a silver round gear type thing . It fits into a groove on the rod and groove on the wiper arm . The silver round peice slips on rod . Causing wiper arm not to move. Not sure if its the gear or the rod that's stripped. Not sure how the get the gear off. This sounds like it cld get expensive so I'm thinkin job weld the gear on the rod and try that before I have to buy a whole assembly
