Wiring question

06 model.

Wanting to wire some led lights underneath on each side so the kids can see to get out safely etc. I can wire them up no prob but would like them to be on the done light switch so that they will go off on their own. Is there a diagram anywhere or has anyone done this? I am not even a little bit electronically inclined, any issues with having two or three more lights in that same circuit ( or whatever it is called) ? Thanks in advance.

Under your drivers door sill toward the front there should be a plastic guard covering the wiring harness. Open the harness carefully and there should be a pink wire with a white stripe (power to dome) and a yellow wire (ground) if you splice into these 2 wires it should operate with your door switch and your headlight switch which also turns your interior lights on.

Got a yellow/white, yellow/red, and yellow/black. Assuming ground is yellow black?

I just double checked the diagram and it should be what I said originally. I specifically remember the pink/white from when I did mine last winter. You can pop your dome and check the wire colors.

It is a 2006 unlimited. I did pull the dome light, you are absolutely correct. However I do not have those colors in the wiring harness behind the plastic cover..... I am color blind mind you but I can compare like colors, and I had my kids double check me. Would they change over further up the harness or come off the brake light harness by chance ? Thank you for the help

You should have yellow/brown wires (coming from fuse 26 in the PDC in front of the battery) powering the lights. The wires going to & up the roll bar changes to pink/white at the connector. Yellow/orange goes to the cluster where there is a timer that turns them off after 20 seconds or so. If you find & tap into these wires you should get the results you want. Test them with a meter to verify.

This may be a very stupid question but.... could I splice into the one coming out of the fuse26 ? Seems it would be easier to route the wires this way if so. Thanks

Yes, for the power but you need the yellow/orange one that goes to the cluster to get them to work like the dome lights. That becomes the ground path when on, open when off. So you will need to find a suitable place to tap into that wire & the yellow/brown will be right there so why go to the fuse panel?

The way Jim said in post #3 seems like the best place

Because i do not have the colors he mentioned behind that plastic cover under the door sill, have them at the done lights but not within the harness. I agree that would be easiest but I could not find those colored wires. If i am reading your reply correctly it is because they change at the connector on the dome light/soundbar.

Again, I am not good with electricity so I am sorry for the confusion. To dummy this down to my level; in harness under door sill, yellow/brown for power and yellow orange for the ground which also would incorporate the timer ?

No need to apologize. Yes those colors & you should be good to go. Let us know how it works. That will help the next guy.

Awesome, and I will definitely post results. My color blindness likely plays a big part in me not being able to wrap my head around things like this. Thankfully my kids are here to help their old man. thanks again to you and Jim as well.
