Won't Start and No Power?

Searched the forums, but can't find my exact problem, here it is:
2000 TJ 4.0
About once a week, fails to start.
When I hit the key, the starter engages for a split second, then everything goes dark, no power to headlights, radio, dash, interior lights.
Rekeying gets me nothing - it's all dark.
If I remove the key and wait for a minute or two it'll fire right up no problem.
It has not died on the road, so seems related to starting.

Battery is new last month, and have made no changes that touch the electrical system. Is there some kind of thermal breaker in the starter that may be going? Would that take out everything?
Any thoughts appreciated.

how long has it been doing it?

i'd say check all your connections and see if it still does it.. seems to be shorting out somewhere

It's been doing it a couple weeks.
I'm planning on tracing/cleaning the electrical between the battery and starter.
Just wondering if anyones seen this one before I start replacing the expensive parts.

I would also guess wires from batt to starter. Had the same issue with my old yj. New terminals up top and never again.

you have a loose or dirty battery terminal(s) or both. use baking soda to get the corrosion off and be sure to wear gloves and old clothes. make sure you tighten them down good.
if you are mechanically inclined, get replacement ones if yours are real bad.
either way, this will fix your problem.

This. If everything goes dead simultaneously, this means you have lost electrical power. Whenever it has happened to me, I have always found a loose cable on one of my battery terminals.

I replaced the negative chassis and engine block cables, they looked a bit questionable.
Seems fine now, but it was an intermittant problem so......
Will update in a week if it worked.

Hello. I'm new here also. I just bought a '99 TJ. I started and drove it 5 times. 6th time it clicked and all the lights blinked & wouldn't start. Gave it a jump ran fine. Parked it. Next day same story 'cept this time after it fired it would die if I wasn't reving it. Checked the battery cables and the positive was so loose I was able to remove by hand. I cleaned the posts and cable connections, tightened it down and she fires right up and purrs like a kitten.

Is this still going on?
It sounds like a short to me I've seen this on big peterbuilts with trailers usually I disconnect the trailer to see if the tractor will start if it does I start checking the trailer lights for corrosion. So check/ clean all your plugs if it still does it disconnect as much stuff as you can then start plugging it back in one at a time. This will help you localise your search. It is an intermittent short which could have you chasing it all day or month. With it being intermittent I'd say 75% chance of broke/damaged wire if your lucky it's just some corrosion
Oh and best battery terminal cleaner/ protector I've found is WD 40 try it you will be shocked (don't use this in your plugs get some contact cleaner for that). Had a brittish mech show me that 4 years ago and haven't had to touch it since.

I replaced the negative cables as noted earlier, no problems since, must have been the problem. Interestingly, the cables seemed fine, just a slight discoloration of the metal cable where the cable was crimped into the terminal, i've seen much, much worse on cars that run fine before.
Thanks to all for input!
