Unhappy Won't Start / Dials Jumping / Hazard light noise

First off, thanks in advance.. I've seen a lot of great help posted on these forums and I thought I'd register in the hopes that someone could give me a hand with a very strange electrical issue I seem to be having.

The jeep won't start, won't even try to turn over. So I thought the battery might be dead, but when I open the door, my dials are bouncing all over the place. (All of them).

When I try to turn the hazard lights on (just did this out of curiosity) a buzzing noise starts up in my dash.

Anyone know what this might be?

(2003 Jeep Wrangler Sport, 45,000 miles approx)

very low battery. clean terminals, charge battery and see if it will start. then you might want to buy new battery.

Thanks, flatline. I'll give that a try. Just never seen dials flip out like that with a dead battery or I'd have gone that route without asking. :P

Your jeep is possessed. jk Mine did the same thing about a year ago. I took it for a nice long ride to the river and when I got back in and tried to crank it, nothing except a click and jumping guages. The first thing to do is to check your connections. Clean them thoroughly with a wire brush and get ALL of the corrosion. Any amount no matter how insignificant it seems can cause this. Make sure that the connections are tight. Once connected you should not be able to move them at all. Chances are that this has already killed your battery and you will probably have to replace it.

That's what I thought at first!

Went out this morning and cleaned the terminals. Funny thing is, everything works with the key turned to ACC. Radio comes on, headlights work... everything. Even the light under the hood was bright enough to be seen at dawn.

Then I try to turn over, I get a hard-click and everything shuts off. Lights, radio, dash...zip.

I'll pick up a new battery today and see if that does any good.

These guys are dead on. I came out to the same thing in late June. Had been to 3 places and restarted with no problem. Forth place I hit the key and nothing but crazy gauges and clicking. My dad taught me years ago that your horn is a great makeshift battery tester. Hit the horn and it sounded like a dying cow (not that the TJ horn is great anyway). The battery was so dead it wouldn't even jumpstart. Tossed in a new battery and she kicked right off.
