Won't start with key

I have a 1997 TJ with the 2.5L engine. All of a sudden, it does nothing when I turn the key. The normal dash lights come on for BRAKE, CHECK ENGINE, ETC. in the accessory position. But when turning the key for ignition and starter, there is nothing. No sound. I have a brand new battery. The interior and head lights all work. When I put the Jeep in reverse, get it rolling and pop the clutch it starts and I can drive. Ideas?

Short in the starter or connections to your starter. Check your starter. I think it is the starter..

Seeing how many times i can say starter in the same post.

Take a short 2x4 and whack the starter a couple of times, as they get old the brushes go bad, sometimes whacking it will temporarily fix the problem, it usually works a few times. I just had to do my 97 a few months ago. I replaced with a NEW not a rebuilt starter, I've had problems with rebuilds, in fact I go new with starters, alternators, water pumps and fuel pumps.

No one is going to mention the neutral safety switch.First try to put it in neutral and see if it starts if not smack the starter with a small hammer while someone is holding the key to start. If none of this works pull your starter off and take to the rebuild shop and have them test it.If bad you can either go with having it rebuilt or go buy a new one.Personally if it is a reputable shop the rebuilds hold just as good as new.If all else fails park on a hill
