Wrangler Sport = Death trap??

I've recently purchased a 2001 Wrangler Sport 4.0. When I'm driving at any speed over 60 ish MPH I get a very violent shake in the front. It feels as if I'm missing lug nuts or that both the front tires are about to fly off. I have 20 inch rims all around and recently had the alignment done. Is it normal to get a shake at high speeds in a wrangler? I've read they aren't made for speed, is this why? Please advise.

Is it controllable? Shimmies and shakes and death wobble are usually due to a bad alignment (don't trust shops to know that the factory specs are NO good on TJs with any mods at all), worn out suspension components (most often the track bar), unbalanced wheels/tires (it needs to be PERFECT), or worn out steering components. Balljoints can do it too so check to feel if they feel smooth and somewhat tight. My TJ holds rock steady at 90mph with no shakes or odd behavior so don't let anyone convince you it's a 'jeep thing'

On my old Jeep (95 YJ), when I first bought it it had the same type of violent shake at any speed above 55 mph, but only when going around a turn. I threw the wheels on the balancer at work to see what the deal was and it turned out I had a bent wheel. I switched it with the spare wheel and everything was fine after that.

Let us know how you progress with the solution to your death wobble, as this is a common issue with lifted Jeeps. Quick question, do you have a "fade" paint job on that, or is it just the picture? It looks like it fades from silver in the front to black just above the rear fender.

Nice whipp. Don't let em mess with ya on the dubs yo. I saw a jeep with 24's and it looked like trash(in my mind)but you sized it nicely. I had the same "death wobbel" 2 days after puttin' on cepek 15's and some super swampers ssr's Turned out i broke a sway bar link fallin in some ruts. Just a ? though howmany times do you rub those tires in the flares.

Most likey inpart caused by the 20's, which give a nice look, but also can result in other issues. Such as poor ride, more heat build up, longer braking distance to name a few. There was a whole section in car and drive or road and track last year about big rims and tire/ride/ issues.

The paint does fade silver to black, and the tires for some reason only rub when cutting the wheels too far left. You would think bumps, and anything else would cause rub but it doesn't. AND sorry to be a stick in the mud. But as for the translation into "white", WHATEVER... I didn't know Jeep owner = redneck. I think that was a poor choice of words Admin Henderson. Potentionally offensive to someone "else" reading these posts.

If none of the above advise works, try a 6" lift, 15x10 steel wheels, and a set of 35" mtrs. It should ride perfect.

I think the Jeep looks cool with the 20s.

Also, there are no races in this forum. I've been talking to many of these people since the beginning of the forum. People I'm talkin' to might be purple, for all I know. Don't care. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I am not current on the hip language of todays youth is all I meant.

well not to interupt the 20 in topic, but for the death wobble check your steering stabilizer, the balance of your tires, and your track bar those have all been the causes of mine death wobbles...seeing as it keeps coming back mainly because the my rims cant be balanced.

This needs to stop here and now. I was hoping that this was difused and then someone wants to egg it on. We encourage fun here, but this is getting a bit in the red. Let's get it back in the green.

We should all appreciate the fact that someone has done something different with their Jeep. I'm glad to see something different besides the same ole jacked up jeeps with the oversized tires.

I'm not. 20's on a jeep that don't have 42 inch tires wrapped around them look plain silly. I do dig the paint job however. Henderson was just trying his best to translate the ebonics of the sentence above. No harm no foul. So whoever was griping at him can relax a step or two.

As for why it rubs on turns is because your tires are rubbing on the lower control arms because of the narrower width of the TJ axles along with the bigger rims/tires. This same thing happens to someone that puts only bigger tires on their jeep. You just happen to have bigger rims and less rubber. There are steering stop located on the inside of the knuckles. You can remove that bolt on each side and stick some washers in there to limit by just a bit the full lock to lock capability of your rig. This should help with the rubbing.

As far as the Death Wobble tighten everything up on your front suspension. The trac-bar first, steering components, front upper and lower control arms. If everything is tight, then check the bushings in the control arms and the trac bar. Those are the major causes of the problem you are facing.
