1986 yj

I was talking to a buddy of mine over the weekend who also is a long time Jeep owner. He was telling me that his dad bought one of the first YJ's that came out and that it was actually a 1986 model. I said that this was not correct and that it was probably and 87' and this guy was insistent that it was an 86' model. Anybody know abou this? I still say he's wrong but I thought I'd ask around and see if there was anything to this.

Remember, new year models were released fall of the previous year, so its possible. Up to 86 they were a CJ7, and the new YJ are basically a CJ7 with different fender flares and new electronics.

It may actually be titled that way but I wouldnt think so. He may have bought it in 86 but its still an 87 model IF its a YJ with square headlights. Its kinda like owning a 96 Wrangler or an 83 Corvette. The year model just doesnt exist.

I really don't think it's an 86', I'd never heard of that before but in the Jeep world, I'm surprised a lot!

he could have easily bought it in 86 with an 86 build date
but if it had square headlights, it was an 87 model year even if it was listed wrong on the title
