1987 wrangler flywheel problem?

My son-in-law bought a 1987 wrangler. About a week after he bought it, I drove it. I cranked it up and the starter did not sound just right. Well about a week later starter mess-up,the bendix stripped off. So I checked the flywheel and it had a two little nick in the teath. So I got a new flywheel and starter for it. Advance flywheel Part #50-1004 this was not the right one. So i got part # 50-1001 then I put this one in. That's the same as the one that came out of it. It still dose not sound right when it cranks. I belive it will strip off the bendix again! Is it missing something, like shim or whats the problem? HELP,HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the flywheel that was in it was the wrong one....

I have an 87 and it was super loud on the start. Lost the teeth on one starter 3 months after i bought it put a new one in and it was still loud. One day my master clutch cylinder went out and I needed to move the jeep so I left it in gear to walk it forward a few feet and ate the teeth off that one. Finally I got my current starter and while it still seems louder than most vehicles starting it's better than it was. I had to really get it tight against the fly wheel when I put it in. Been 3 months so far and still ok.

Same thing happened when I installed my flywheel. So, i put 2 washer to give it a gap.

I found that one washer still have a problem, but 2 work great. Tested out with yours and see if that help.

I had the same problem, I would go through a starter in about a month to two months. I tried every starter from every auto parts place and finally bit the bullet and purchased a gear reduction starter. Took care of all the problems. Plus has the ability to climb a hill if your motor stalls and can work under water. Here is a link to look at one if you'd like to.
