1987 YJ backseat question...and tranny

hello....new jeeper here....so excited!
Has anyone ever changed out the 2 seat backseat to make it a 3 seater....not just adding a seatbelt, I mean cut out wheel well? Just wondering for advice or opinion please.

Also we currently have a 3 speed auto tranny.....we really want a 4 speed auto....we are looking for its called an A500 or called 42RH....heard it comes from a late 80s early 90s..dakota....we have called junk yards...got the word out to everyone. Has anyone changed out there tranny to something else?? Got to be someone out there that can give us their advice...

Some people have swapped to the AW4 4-speed from the Cherokees. I believe it bolts to the motor but needs a different tail shaft housing to get the transfer case angle clocked right. And I'm not sure about the length.

I have an aw-4 from a cherokee(got engine, tranny, t-case, wire harness, and computer from friends totaled cherokee), but it is far too long for a wrangler IMHO/it rotates the transfer case too much counter clock.

Do not cut out the wheel wells, my friend added side facing seats in the rear of his wrangler, though some passengers have gotten hurt..... you're very limited with the wranglers. I also saw someone on the trail who took the 3 person front seat out of a commanche and put it in his wrangler.

2.5 with an auto isn't a good combo when it comes to power. Better off going with the AX15 5 speed out of a 6 cyl. Probably about the same cost as replacing the AX5.
