1989 Wrangler Problems?

OK so heres the deal. My 1989 Wrangler keeps shutting off on me. It'll be running fine and then the power just cuts off. Its happened on the freeway a lot, and just in general keeps dying on me. I think it has to do with the fuel pump.

When it shuts down fuel goes into the exhaust pipe and it collected in the muffler and ignited and now my muffler exploded. I don't know what to do to fix it.

It also shuts down a lot more going up hill......?

Does anyone have any ideas?

Start by looking for loose or shorted wires in the ignition system. you shouldn't be getting fuel in your exhaust if you have a fuel delivery problem.

My stepdads GMC was doing the same thing, he changed his fuel filter and it fixed the problem.

That is the biggest question...what engine do you have and have you done any modifications to it. We can help you better if we have all the info.

Mine did the same thing. It was the electronic fuel module mounted on the driver side just under the windshield washer fluid bottle. I think they run about $150.00 or so from NAPA. Good luck.

I would suggest checking the Ignition module also. But when I used to buy them I only paid about $40. HTH

I just replace mine with one from Advance for $30. Could be different for the 4 banger though.
