1989 yj wrangler v8 conversion

Hey guys after some long thinking I think I might want to do a v8 conversion on my yj. Just wanted to know a couple things. Where could I get a v8 at? What all will I need to do this? Pics range? Is it something that an expert should do? And just anything any of you think I should know before doing this.

Thanks

I got a 350 v8 in mine and love it. Although I bought it with it In. Check craigslist.

The 350 is a perfect fit, and I think the dodge magnum is too. I see rebuilt 350s for like 700$ and them are like new. Could find one real cheap too.

Thanks I will look into that. I was actually considering a 350. Is there a certain 350 that will fit or just any 350 in general

novak-adapt.com They have tons of information on this swap sounds like you should do some reading. There adapting parts are also top notch quality and they have excellent customer service.

Actually a small block ford fits better because the distributor is in the front. You can get an injected one out of an explorer for 400-500. Then if you want, you can use the ford tranny and case and the driveshaft will come out on the correct side for your stock jeep axles.

Really I didn't think it was that bad for it's condition. But would something like that fit?

I'd want to know a lot more about it. "street and strip CAM" could mean a bunch of things, and not all of them are suitable for regular daily driver use. LOL yea, that seems a bit high to me.

Me, I'm going with a stocker. prolly small block ford. I think you prolly don't need to be an EXPERT per se, but you'll prolly need access to some tools not found in the average basement. Engine lift and whatnot.

I'm still in the fantasizing stage. lol

To add to it is that since that guy tore it down bored and stroked it who knows if he cut corners on it or how good of quality his work is. I'd start out with a stock 350, get it in there running good then add some power adders later on down the road. But thats just me. And what I'm doing with mine. I'm in the process of getting parts together. Got the 350, got the 700r4, got the novak motor mounts, got the bog warner style rear mount, and got some engine enamel and high temp paint to start making the 350 look all pretty and what not before it goes in. Need the adapting kit to hook my np231j up to the 7004r, need the radiator, need the fuel pressure regulator, may need some headers, need odds and ends (fuel lines, oil lines, tranny lines, shifting linkage) and may need to do driveshaft modifacations. Slow going since I'm layed off though.

well i am in the process of dropping a 350 in my YJ. one thing that is always brought up but everyone i guess ignores is cost. i am going stock 350 for now with a ax-15 tranny. i "thought" i could do this for about 1500 but i think now it'll be closer to a above 3k.

If you decide to go with a Chevy 350 the LT1 engine from the ninety's GM vehicles is a good choice. They're fuel injected and the distributor is in the front and out of the way. You can usually find them reasonably priced on E-bay or Craigslist just make sure you get the computer and sensors.

Do that and I will build a shrine in your honor. LOL any idea on your timeframe?

My thinking is a mid-eighties 5.0, the MASS injection one ideally..my goal is just to get some smooth torque - just more of it - and that nice v8 rumble If I can find a normally aspirated motor I'm not opposed to that, either. May even favor that due to my ECM-phobia.

the more I think about it, the more skeert I get. The electronics are scary, but also:

fuel pump/gas tank can stay the same? power steering?

recommend hooking to the ax15(?) tranny, so I can stay with jeep driveline components, yea? currently I got teh four banger, and everything on novak says my stock tranny won't hold up. Heck, I'd even consider an auto tranny, it ain't like I'm rock crawling.

Any thoughts?

Yeah I've been reading and Novak says that the stock 4 banger tranny is the turd of all trannys and it won't hold anything lol I'm in the same boat with the 4 banger
