1990 Wrangler Soft top question

We have spent over a year restoring a 90 YJ. Finally got the carb straightened out so it runs, but before we put the hardtop back on for the summer, I am wondering what is needed to just use a soft top for the summer. I see all kinds of hardware kits or individual bars, but dont know how much it actually needs to put a soft top on. We have just put dollars on top of dollars in this thing and at the end dont really want to get a kit that is missing stuff I need.

Any suggestions or am I just overthinking this and is a soft top more work to actually remove than the hard top?

Soft top kits are pricey if you get a decent one new but they can be found used for a couple hundred bucks. I would say its more painstaking to put them back on than it is to take them off. If (when) I do it again I'd just get a simple bikini top and call it a day. I might be wrong on this but I think with a bikini top you can just put the hard top on over it if you're worried about rain and such. I don't have personal experience with one though.

thanks, we just have the full steel doors so a bikini top will leave a gap between the roll bar and door, even though we like the look. thinking about an emergency top for about 140 instead right now.

U can't put the hard top over the bikini top because it has a window channel just like the soft top. Do you have the sport roll bar or the family roll bar. If you have the family roll bar you can get a Bowles soft top and its just like a bikini top when you take the windows off. Myself I take the hard top off of mine for summer and use a bikini top with no doors.

I was talking along the steel door to the roll bar. I am guessing the sport roll bar is the angled one and family is the straight along the top? we have the angled one. They showed a roll bar cover that had an extension over the rear seat, but if they wrap around the roll bar, it wont seal water from the steel full doors in the rain. I guess I am just thinking too much of all the steel we replaced from being rusted out when rain saturates the inside.

Yea if u use a bikini top the back is gona fill with water and it'll drain to the front so that gap is not gona make a difference. The only way it's gona be rain proof is with a complete soft top or hard top. If its not your daily driver and u have a shed to park it under it'll be fine. I have a shop that's closed in with roll up doors so its not a issue for me.
