1990 YJ Headlight help

Hi everyone,

I'm not mechanically inclined so just need a little direction on this one. My YJ's headlights aren't working. The high beams work fine, but the regular headlights don't. Running lights and everything else seem to be ok (although my gauges are on and off at the moment, but I think that's just a loose fuse and not related). I figured it was a little odd that both headlights would go out at the same time, but bought new ones anyway and installed over the weekend....with no luck. Headlights still aren't working but high beams do. I'm not sure what fuse does what under the steering wheel, but would "assume" if the brights worked, that the fuse was ok?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated very much!

Yeah, if your brights are working the fuse is fine...it's probably the dimmer switch...not sure about the 90 but on the 91 it's located close to the bottom of the steering column and is activated by a rod that goes inside the steering column from the lever....the rod may have just slipped off the switch or the switch itself may be toast....do you dim the lights with the multi-function lever on the steering column?

Also the plug on the lights themselves gets corroded and you have to wiggle it

Thanks guys, I'm not sure I even have a "multi-function lever" on the steering column (or at least, I don't remember seeing it) but I will take a look at both of those suggestions when I get home tonight! At least I now have somewhere to start <grin>

lol...the "multi-function lever" is your turn signal lever.....on mine, it's also the dimmer, the wipers, and the cruise...hence "multi-function"....extra info....did a lil research and yours and mine are just alike....located near the base of the steering column....

LOL...thanks jfbilbro! Oddly enough they started working again....on their own! I'll get under there soon and take a good look though...would like them to be reliable! Even though I do have an aftermarket / seperate set of fog lamps that I could flip on in the event they stopped working one night.

Thanks again! Mark.
